Life As A Red Vest, Week #43

Day 193:  Memorial Day
Began my morning with a phone call.
"Are you on your way in?"

"No....Tasha okayed me coming in at 5, due to my back killing me all weekend."

"I wish someone had TOLD me!"

I arrived at 5 and was told I was up front.  But after clocking in, Aggie told me to go outside.  Was out there until close; it was nice, due to traffic slowing down!  Mainly just chatted with Cindy and Sara, lol!  Took a break at 6:30, and ate two JJ sandwiches and a cupcake.  Sara and Cindy left at 7, and had maybe 3 customers until they closed me down at 8.  Went in and cleaned the training and break rooms, then took the trash down.  At 9, went up front and ended up hauling CS trash before collecting everything and clocking out around 9:30.

Outfit:  Purdue tee, faded capris.

Day 194:  8-5 LG
Arrived late, due to oversleeping.  Clocked in at 8:10, and Mel was opening LG as I walked in behind her.  Had maybe 3 customers the first hour, then averaged maybe a customer every 5-10 mins when Sara arrived to help out at 10.  She went to lunch at 11; I went at 12.  Both McDs and Wendy's were backed up, but McD's line had less traffic.

After lunch, things picked up a bit, but at 3:30, we were steady all the way until Gracie arrived to relieve me at 5:15.  Had two Mexican women drive me crazy with their discounted flowers, in BULK, and the older one 'bragging' to the younger one about spending $$ there.  "Yesterday, I spent $700..."  Lady, where the hell did you get those kind of funds or how do you plan to pay your credit card bill?  And why are you nit-picking over the discounted price and making sure you get your military discount?  *eye roll*  Plus, have you nothing better to do than come in an buy landscaping items?

At least I only had to have 3 overrides all day long.....all three on the damn $15 roses.

Also, after I returned from lunch, it began sprinkling, and since the wind was blowing from the east, both S and I felt it.  Fortunately, it wasn't a torrential downpour, so we didn't get soaked, just damp and slightly chilly.

Outfit:  White NHRA polo, faded capris.

Day 195:  8-5 LG
Began my day by waiting for HC Cindy to open up LG; had 3 customers until 9.  Things picked up around 11:30; I was sent to lunch around 1 after we finally got some $$ in the register.  When I arrived back, Eli had arrived, so his register was the 'charge' and mine the 'cash'.

-Had one lady who only wanted to buy the ripped bags of potting mix; discovered later I discounted the wrong ones.  Oops...
-Had another lady who only wanted to buy an already discounted rose bush ($15) for $5; Kylie said okay.
-Gave too much change to one customer who DID return and gave it back to me:)
-Had a hell of a time getting anyone to call me; turned out I needed to tell them 263, not 262!
-It poured outside twice; the 1st time so hard, it got me slightly damp!
-Asthma bothered me; had to puff before work and after lunch at Wendy's.
-Family arrived after lunch; stimulus check had hit.  S wanted flowers.

At 3:30, E was sent on break, and at 4, I was sent to Lumber to cover for Pam's lunch.  Clocked out at 5:10 and went home.

Outfit:  Blue rugby tee, faded Capris

Day 196:  12:30-close, Lumber
Day went well!  I was in a good mood, and for the 1st three hours, we played 'register roulette'....I'd be on two while Jill went on break, then on Reg 1 while Marci went to break.....then I'd go on break and be on #3!  Marci left at 3, and we were fairly steady.  HC Cindy called me and asked if I minded waiting until 5 to go to lunch.  I said no, so she had Jill go to break, then to LG.  Finally at 5:45, Jill returned to send me to lunch; I was starving!

Returned at 6:50, and J left at 7.  Was steady all the way up til close.  Didn't wear my mask at all, due to asthma acting up.  No one said anything, yay!

Outfit:  Yellow Fla tee, black long-sleeved undershirt, faded capris, blue stud earrings.

Day 197:  12-close, Lumber
Had another good day! Arrived and gave Jill her break, then was on Reg #3 for a while.  The guy from S & S Rentals hit on me; he'd purchased a PB cup and I teased, "Oh, you brought me lunch!"  He told me, "I am happily single..."  I replied, "I'm married with 3 kids and one grandchild."  Then we talked about our grandkids while I finished ringing him up.  Saw him again later, and he teased that he still hadn't bought me lunch!

Went to lunch at 4 (Subway) and when I returned, Marci left at 6.  Jill and I were cleaning, so at 7, HC MK asked if I'd clean the women's restroom.  So I went down and did it and the unisex one, and took out the trash before returning to Lumber.  Jill left at 7:30, and right after, a couple arrived.  They tried to pay with a gift card, which turned out to be tied to her dad's ID....which sparked her temper, because her dad was in the bathroom, and when he came out, he was trying to yell his ID # from across the room....and with the overhead speaker and the guys bringing in carts, she couldn't hear him to repeat the #, so she lost her temper and (thankfully!) directed it at the customer behind her..."don't return anything here and put it on a Gift Card, b/c then it will forever be tied to your ID and you won't be able to share it with anyone!"

They stormed out, her still venting her fury.  While she'd been speaking to her mom, I'd flagged Scott down to explain the process to her hubby, in the hopes of calming everyone down.  Didn't work!

Locked the doors, took my trash down, along with the extra soda, then took the cart back to Lumber....and to someone banging on the door!  Turned out, we'd locked Kyle and Elmer outside!  I let them in, then went up front.

Outfit:  Black/tan dress shirt, dark capris, light blue stud earrings, black/pink compression anklets.

Life as a Red Vest, Week #42

Day 191: Memorial Saturday
First of all, it sure doesn't feel like Memorial Weekend.  No Indy 500, no Rendezvous, no Farmer's Market....but what did feel 'normal' was the crowd at work.  At one point, we had 3 lines going full blast, just like after the 1st stimulus checks arrived in bank accounts.

Had one 'oopsie'.....was ringing up a bunch of plumbing pipe and realized something had stalled the register, but I'd already bagged it all.  Tried to figure out where the stall occurred, but lines were long, so I just said. 'You know what?  I don't care; Merry Christmas!' and totalled it out.

My back started killing me about an hour in; it never let up.  Went to lunch at Subway, and it felt better while I was sitting down, but after returning to work, had to bend down and there it was again.  Traffic slowed a bit, but we definitely needed two people in Lumber all day.  Thankfully, I was due to leave at 7, but my final customer needed an approval code, so had to call the 1-800 # and was able to clock out around 7:10.

Did enjoy my 5 days off!

Outfit:  Blue striped tee, dark capris.  It was 85 degrees outside.

Day 192:  Memorial Sunday
As I arrived, was informed all the credit card machines were down, and we were 'cash only'.  Thankfully, that only lasted about an hour, and everyone in Lumber was fairly nice about the situation.  Marci, Jill, and I work well together, so everything went smoothly....except that my back continued to ache.  Same thing as yesterday; it would start to get really bad, and I'd get sent on break to sit down.  But by 7pm, I was in horrible pain, since I'd gone to lunch at Wendy's at 3:30, and my last break was at 6:30.  At 7, J left, and so did my get up and go.  The scanner kept throwing a fit, so had to use my phone app to scan for the item #, which slowed things down, and the credit machine threw a fit on certain cards.  Had to hand-key in several all day.  Finally, we closed; I locked the doors and sanitized everything, plus took down the trash.  By the time I clocked out, I was ready to nearly cry with the pain, and asked Mgr T 'how bad do you need me tomorrow?'  She said I was needed to close, and asked if I could come in 12-close or even 2-close.  I suggested 5-close, and she agreed.  Told her my back had been screaming at me for 2 days.  Am hoping the extra time off will settle it down.  I really need to schedule a session with Jen.

Outfit:  White tee, black/white vest, dark capris.  Again, temps were mid-high 80s, with a thunderstorm at 6pm.

Life as a Red Vest, Week #41

Day 186:  8-5
Began my day in Lumber, and things were fairly nice and smooth.  Kem went to break, then I moved over to #2, and at 10, took my 1st break.  I was hungry, but the machine wouldn't take my credit card, so Brandt loaned me a dollar for a Snickers.  Then when I returned, K went to lunch.  At 11, MK told me that as soon as K returned, to please go to LG and give Alex a chance to warm up.  K didn't return until 11:15, and after I took my pit stop, MK paged me.  Called her and told her I was heading out there; everything was okay.  I 'suited up' and went to relieve Alex.

Close to noon, I spotted D pulling into the lot (he'd kept the phone, due to needing to speak to his INR nurse) and he not only returned my phone, but asked if I was close to lunchtime, and if so, he'd get LJS.  I called MK, who confirmed yes, my lunch would be at noon.  So D went across the street; Cris relieved me at noon; I took another pit stop and took off my vest, then clocked out and went to meet D in the parking lot.  Sat in the warm truck and ate my fries, cole slaw, and 3 chicken, as well as one crab cake, then we went to Subway to get the kids' lunch.  He returned me at 1, and I discovered I'd be back outside.  Ate another Snickers, then 'suited up' again and relieved C.

Rang up one customer, then C returned and told me they wanted me inside.  I went inside, but both Cindy and Mel were confused, and told me to go back, since I was already prepared.  So I did...and stayed there until the end of my shift.

Had a few issues with not seeing the 'clearance' tag, and we discovered a discrepancy with the ferns.  The bar code on the flowers rings up $32.98; however, the PLANTER rings up $14.98!  Aliscia said she'd left a note for Kylie about it.  All in all, I think C only needed one o/r, and so did I.

Did learn where the azaleas were, lol!  Plus, even though we don't have to wear masks outside, I discovered they DO keep your face warm.  Took my final break at 3:45, and loaned my final dollar (D had given me 2 after lunch, when Subway was out of cookies) to Cory.  Returned and sent C to lunch, and when C returned at 5:15, I left to go clock out.

Felt like I was sneaking out, lol!

Outfit:  Red turtleneck, blue compression socks.  It was only 54 degrees outside!

Day 187:  8-5, #2
Once again, was in Lumber from 8-11, then was sent up front.  Hopped on #10 and was there for ninety mins, until I was sent to lunch.  Went to McD's, and when I returned, was sent out to LG.  Took my break at 3, and was in LG until 4, then sent to Lumber, where things went downhill.  Not too much; just slightly.

Customer A wanted to pay $212 in cash, and the rest on the card.  Register would NOT take the cash, despite multiple attempts.  Called HC C, and tried it one more time.  It took it, but at the last second, switched.  C ended up finishing the sale, refunding it, then we re-scanned everything.  This time, did the card 1st, then the cash, and it worked:)

Customer B had a box of switches; Mgr T came down as I was ringing it up.  I'd also forgotten to put my mask back on after the fiasco with A!  Thought she was going to take me to task for that, but no, she took me to task for not ringing up every single switch individually.

Customer C had everything invoiced, but part of his order was behind the Pro desk.  We found part of it.....then the screws were on the counter.....but where was the drywall mud?  He called Brandon, who revealed he'd not grabbed it yet.  Customer found it, and away they went.  Pam reappeared, and I clocked out and went home.

Outfit:  Long-sleeved black tee (taken off after lunch), Maroon JHS Band tee.  It was a glorious 86 degrees and WINDY!  I joked that my hair looked like a lionfish....hair sticking straight up!

Saw Bill Hall, Pam from church, and Penny K:)

Day 188:  8-5, #3
Was in Lumber all day, and for the first four hours, things were nice and steady.  It poured about the time I went on break, and when Kem went to lunch, things picked up slightly, but not much.  I went to lunch at noon, and S brought A and Taco to me at 12:30, as I was eating my Wendy's (they brought my Aleve to me).

After lunch, things were strange.
-A man told me he'd found this siding in a bundle; neither me nor Kyle could find it on the app or on his Zebra.  He asked the guy if he'd gotten it off a cart; no.  K went to the back, then called me.  The guy's son confirmed he'd taken it off a cart; K told me he'd taken it off someone's order.  When I informed the customer he'd have to take it back, he got pissy (probably b/c he got caught?) and threw his lumber on the floor for his son to pick up, then paid for it, muttering 'You never see this at M....no wonder L's in bankruptsey'....

-A customer asked me about the 5-in-1 Craftsman thingy....I went with him to CS, only to be told Tools is supposed to order it, so back we went, and I found Olivia to turn him over to.

-Mgr T came down and ragged me about something.

-Later, she returned and ragged me about 'why are all the customers over at #2?'  I replied they had just gotten in line.  'No, they were up here as I walked up.'  Yeah, but they were also conferring over their list.  Get off my back...

-P went to lunch and half an hour later, I needed an o/r.  After I got it, Josh arrived and called for help.  People were patient; I could have handled it.

I was soooooo happy when P arrived back!

Outfit:  White flamingo tee, long-sleeved black tee.

Day 189:  12:30-close
The first four hours, I wished I'd stayed in bed.

I went to McD's for lunch, then was up front for the 1st hour, then went down to Lumber.....and all hell broke loose.
-Customer A paid with a check.  Check refused to cooperate, so entered it manually....then the printer locked up.  Nothing worked, so called for back up.  Moved over to #3 while Mel was dealing with it.  #3's printer refused to print....as soon as Mel left!  Called again for backup, and this time Jessica showed up.  We ended up alternating customers on 2 and 3 until the register rebooted, and then everything was fine....until I tried to scan a countertop.  It wasn't in the system, which backed up the line AGAIN.  Finally Jessica got it to work, then Melisa went to lunch.  I hopped over to #1....and customer C needed an override!

Finally around 3, things settled down.  I went to lunch at 4, and was happy to see there was NO WAITING at Arby's!  Was back by 4:20, and enjoyed my gyro.  Clocked back in at 5 and things were steady.  At 8:30, I was able to start sanitizing, and had everything done, including the soda, by 9:20.  We all clocked out at 9:30.

Outfit:  Lowe's tee.  Discovered nearly everyone was also eschewing the masks, so took mine off within seconds of arriving at the front!

Day 190:  11-8pm
Today was a welcome change from yesterday!  I didn't wear my mask, and no one complained.  Began my day at Subway, and wolfed it down before clocking in.  Was in Lumber all day; took my 1st break around 1, and lunch at 3:30.  It poured on and off through the early hours, then the sun came out.  Ordered lunch from McAllister's, and walked over to get it.  Took my 2nd break at 5:30, since Melisa left at 6.  Did the pop count, plus spilled my drink down my shirt.  Ron L came by as I was counting the soda and teased me about shaking my ass at everyone....then when he returned, I was counting the Monster cooler, and he asked, "Are you still standing there?"  I told M to charge him double; he was 'harassing' me, ha ha!

Also saw Tracy L, who told me about how he tried to cut off his thumb with a circular saw.  He'd hit a knot, and the saw jumped.

Began sanitizing everything around 6:30, and it began POURING around 7:30.  The place cleared out; I was able to get everything done by 8.  Katelyn and Jasmine came down to finish loading the soda cooler (I was with a customer), and after the rain slacked off enough the customers could leave, I locked the doors, took my trash down, and took off my vest.  We all clocked out around 8:25.

Outfit:  Black lace/Blue dress shirt, dark capris, black/pink compression anklets.  Thinking I might order the large ones next time....

Life As A Red Vest, Week #40

Day 181:
Got called in at 2; I made it by 2:30.  Retrieved a mask from the training room, and instantly hate it.  Saw Steve as I was heading up front and asked if I could formally protest.....he said sure, but it wouldn't do me any good!  I said I know; just wanted to go on record!

Was up front for an hour, then was sent to Lumber, then outside, where I stayed until 7.  Went to dinner at Subway at 5:15, then was so happy when HC Cindy closed me down!  Went back up front, and sanitized Reg 12 and 13, plus emptied trash and swept.  At 8, volunteered to clean the break and training rooms, and was finished by 8:40.  Hauled the trash down, then returned up front and locked the doors, and waited for C to finish emptying registers.  We managed to leave at 9:30:)  Jess had taken care of the bathrooms, so whoo hoo!

Outfit:  White/gold shirt, blue vest.  No earrings, due to stupid black mask, which made it hard to breathe, and out in LG, had to take off my glasses.

Told C I was not going to look at my phone tomorrow until 5pm, ha ha!  The masks just don't make sense; it's like using birth control after being told you're 6 mos pregnant!

Day 182:
Went in at 3:30, and was very happy learn that if cashiering in LG, no masks are necessary!  Whoot!  Things went smoothly, and took my half hour lunch at 6.  Elijah left at 7, and Mel shut me down at 8.  I cleaned the training and break rooms, then went up front and returned a few items to Tools, then sanitized the safety gates.  We all clocked out at 9:30:)  I have to go to Indy tomorrow, but said I would come in when I got back into town and help close.

Outfit:  Dark yellow tee, faded capris, leg wrap and yellow compression socks.

Day 183:
Things were going well.  Had a good dr visit; good visit with Liz, ate both Subway and Popeye's.  D dropped me at work at 7:30; they had 3 lanes going.  I went to the back, grabbed my vest and mask, and headed up front.  Took over for Marilyn (who'd finally earned her vest!), and an hour later, realized I'd not clocked in!  My 8pm customer was a CFH.....her invoiced order didn't get added to her items, so had to call Mel when we could no longer locate it....even after being invoiced twice more!  Then, when I went to ring up the rest of her items again, scanner refused to cooperate.  Switched registers....still couldn't find invoice!  So she finally paid for it separately.....and I escaped to clean the break and training rooms.  Was gonna clean the bathrooms, but Gracie wanted that job, so I did the pop count.  Apparently took too much time doing it, for when I arrived at the front, everyone grabbed soda from the cart and began stuffing it into the coolers.  I'd clocked in at 8:30, so when we clocked out at 10, I noted my mistake.  Still have to work 10-7 tomorrow, despite asking Scott if I could work 5-close or even 3-close!  *sigh*

Outfit:  Blue Cabella's sweatshirt, Jeff Band tee, 'Marauder's Map' mask.

Day 184:
Clocked in and was happy to be in Lumber:)  Marci was going to lunch, so took over for her.  We were steady, then at noon, Aggie called and told me to take my break when I could.  I SHOULD have taken it around 12:30, but Marci was waiting for an override, so I took care of the rest.  By the time she got her o'r, the line was long again, so I stuck around.  An hour later, Marci took her 2nd break, since I was headed to lunch.  When she came back, I 'escaped', and took not only my 15, but my hour long break at McAllister's.

When I returned, both Marci and Brea were headed home; soon I needed help, so Sacred came down for 30-45 mins, then Sara came down and stayed.  Earlier, Mel had to deal with an angry customer who'd had an issue with another associate.  One of my customers complained about Scott, and around 5, I had to pacify a 'diva' contractor, but then incurred his wrath when I first informed him he only had $78 in his LAR, and then when he went to write his check, told him the wrong amount.  He huffed, so I pushed his cart behind the counter until Mon.  Ten minutes later, he was back; Brandon had taken care of him up front.  I gave him his cart and told him to have a good day, then apologized again for the screw-ups.

Things settled down, then at 6, we couldn't get anyone to come down for an override on a $9 gallon of paint.  Jess finally arrived, then Aggie called at 6:30 and asked if I needed a break.  I told her no, the line was long, and I was due to get off in 30 mins anyway.  Sara was dealing with a complicated order, so I turned off my light and continued to ring up people, and my final customer needed an approval code.  I was on the phone for 15 mins for authorization, and the customer was both confused and irritated by the delay.  I finally got my code, and finished his order.  He left; I gathered my stuff and left!  Clocked out at 7:30:)

Outfit:  Black/gray long sleeved leopard print shirt, blue stud earrings.

Day 185:  Mother's Day
Clocked in at 10:30, and ate a cupcake that Aggie had brought, as well as wearing the yellow flower ring that decorated said cupcake, on my little finger!  There was also one last chocolate long john doughnut, so was happy.

I'd brought Logan, Kyle, and Elmer each a candy bar (I'd also brought one for Mel...she was thrilled!), and L snatched his up instantly, saying he needed it!  K and E each thanked me....Gavin refused my offer to buy him something!  First half of the shift went smoothly; then Marci went to lunch at 1:30 and I had a bit of a rush.  Paged for help twice, but no one showed up, so thanked everyone for their patience!

Went to lunch at 2:30, just as Reg 2 ran out of fives and tens.  Had fixed a caesar pasta salad before leaving, so ate that, plus my own Twix bars.  When I returned, had a woman wondering about a door price....discounted it, then looked at the item #....the picture she showed me was similar, but the item # was off by one.  Gave it to her anyway, even though she was still griping about the $4 price hers had rang up.  Hopefully when she looks at the receipt, she'll see I still discounted it!  Things slowed down after that, and at 6, Marci did the soda count, I swept.  Gracie brought down the soda and filled it; Marci left at 7; I started sanitizing.  Had two customers....one for the busted concrete, another for an outlet strip.  When Jasmine came down at 7:30, I had everything sanitized and told her all she had to do was empty the trash and sanitize the carts.  Clocked out at 7:34:)

Outfit:  Long-sleeved black tee, Classy tee.

Foot Update:
Abscess is still closing, according to dr!  I have an in-person appointment on the 8th, and my compression wrap arrived on April 29th, in order to provide 30 mm of compression, as opposed to the 15-20 mm the compression socks provide.  Plus, being on my feet for 8 hours causes the wound to bleed more.  I'm trying to work only 2-3 days in a row, as opposed to 4.  I'm also trying to cut my hours back, if they want me to work every day!  Don't know how often they'll want me to work the 'due file' paperwork, but I rather enjoyed it.

Update (5/10):  Compression wrap is working!  Have one more in-person visit on 5/22....will it be the final one??
Update 5/22:  I've been placed on 'as needed' basis!  Wound has fresh skin growing over, so continue with compression as long as I can stand it through the summer months, and can discontinue the Xeroform unless it starts draining again.

For Better Or Worse Vol 3-Lynn Johnston DRR!  Loved this!!!
Fever-Robin Cook Not too bad; it's an older RC book, and still has the hero thinking he knows more than anyone.  Of course, he's proved right in the end, but still....not one of my faves.

The Whispering Room-Dean Koontz
