Saturday's Stupid Saying and Memory Lane:)

You've mistaken that banana for a telephone!

a handy English phrase in a Japanese textbook

This is Beneficence, aka 'Benny' at the north end of the Ball State campus. Legend has it when a virgin walks by, Benny flaps his wings.

This used to be one of my favorite pizza places, The Flying Tomato. Purdue had a similar store, Garcia's Pizza Palace. Pizza by the slice, and YUMMY breadsticks! We also loved the multi-layered interior, with an arcade at the top.

The Ball Tower, added sometime in the past decade.

Lafollett Complex, Woody/Shales Hall
(Shales (men) floors 1-4; Woody (women), floors 5-8)

Fourth window from the right (shades closed) was room 808, where bff E and I lived from 1987-1989. The room to the right, #806, is where I lived Spring Quarter 1987, before E joined me.

Another shot of Lafollet Complex. This isn't Woody/Shales; it's the opposite side. Daughter wouldn't let me go around to the front again.

North Quad, where the majority of my Social Work classes were held.

Student Union. The Indiana Academy presentation was held here. 'Benny' is right across the street.

And finally, here are some pictures of my 'bookshelf', which I display at my craft fair booth. Recognize any familiar titles?

Usually, there are two small boards on the bottom; however, one has been misplaced. I'm hoping to locate it before Nov 12th!

Flashback Friday: Rite of Passage

1980:
Recap: Freshman me, skinny and with a full set of braces on my teeth, somehow managed to catch the eye of a Senior boy in my church Youth Group, while wearing a one-piece, Speedo bathing suit. D played trumpet in the Marching Band, and his sister was in my Bible study.

October brought two changes. My braces were removed after two and a half years of no gum, caramel, or nuts (as soon as they were removed, I demanded a Snickers bar!), and my fairly straight teeth were worth the 'torture' of the monthly orthodontal visits. I had also unknowingly worn my 'Braces are Beautiful' T-shirt that day, so when I arrived back at school (just in time for my English class), I was gently teased about no longer being eligible to wear that shirt anymore, and to 'Take it off!'

My weekends were full of Friday night football games; Saturday Band Contests; and spending two hours on Sunday morning with D; first at Sunday School class, and then sitting beside him during the service. I was blessed with a set of parents who understood my desire to sit with my friends, so Christy, D, and our other friends sat wherever a pew would hold all of us. Then later that day, Dad would drop me back at the church for Choir practice, dinner, and Youth Meeting. And the third week of October, a 'miracle' occurred: I was finally allowed to 'group date'.

D and a bunch of his friends, plus anyone else who wanted to go, would always head to Dairy Queen after CYO. Since I lived six miles out of town, I was one of a few whose parents dropped off and collected us. The first time I was invited, I was highly insulted that I had to wait for my dad to arrive in order to secure permission, and then have him pick me up after an hour. The third week, my mother dropped me off and asked if there was anyway I would be able to get a ride to meet her. I happily asked D if he would be willing; he agreed, so it was a wonderful feeling to climb into his green Dodge Dart (along with about seven others, LOL!) and go to Dairy Queen for ice cream after the meeting. After an hour, we piled into his car again. Since I was the last one to be dropped off, I got the honor of sitting beside him in the front seat.

I was also allowed to go with the group sometimes on Wednesdays, after Bible Study. This didn't happen very often, but it made this Freshman very happy!

I don't remember how high the Marching Band placed that year; all I cared about was getting to see D four days a week.

Next Month: Jealousy.

Have you ever had an idea for a story which scared you after you began writing it?

No not really, because I usually plan out my rough draft. I leave it for a few days then go back to it and start writing.

Have you incorporated actual events from your own life into your books?

Yes I have a few times, and actually predicted a few incidents which I never thought would happen which did.

How much research do you do? Do you research first and then write, or do you write first, then research as needed?

Depending on my plot if I need research then I sit and research everything on the topic that I can find and read up on. After that I plan an outline of what I want my story to be about and write up a first draft. I like to write after my research is done since this gives me a better perspective view of what I want to say and express it more accurately.

Is there any message you want readers to take from reading your work?

Depending on which story they read, each reader reacts differently after reading the same novel. I would like to have my readers to read between the lines, relax and enjoy the book.

Are you a plotter or a pantser? And have you ever had a story take on a life of its own?

I’m a plotter, but then again it depends on what type of story that I am writing. Most of the time my stories take a life of their own and the words come freely to me from my heart to the reader.

How long did it take for you to be published?

I have been published all my life, since the age of three. My father used to a journalist. (Molly pouts) That's not fair! You had the 'Home Field Advantage! Can your dad adopt me?

If you could go back and tell yourself anything when you first began your writing career, what would you say?

Nothing I am happy with what I have now and see how far I have succeeded. I’ve had many setbacks and rejections this is normal. I never let any negativity let me down.

Who are your favorite authors? Who would you say influenced you the most?

Debbie Macomber I love her books, I enjoy Bertrice Small, Jackie M. Smith,

Denyse Bridger, Nicholas Sparks, Margaret Atwood and many others.

My father has influenced me the most to write and become like him.

What would your readers be surprised to learn about you?

That I am a former teacher and chef.

For Fun:

Favorite Halloween memory?

Three years ago with my children, I dressed up myself and people actually thought I was kid. I ended up with two bags of goodies which I donated to the local food bank.

Favorite Scary Movie?

Sorry I don’t watch anything scary anymore. LOL:) I don't either!

Frankenstein, Dracula, or Werewolf?

Dracula

Thank you for being here today! Please tell us where we can find your books.

EXCERPT FOR WEBSITE:

Jade proudly placed a glass in front of Adrienne, skilfully whisking away the already empty chocolate martini glass. Adrienne was really hitting it hard tonight, harder than Jade had ever seen her.

Tears began to flow anew as Adrienne contemplated the azure blue liquor in the smoky glass in front of her. It reminded her of his eyes. Not the cheating lying louse she'd just virtually dumped, or even the eyes of almost dearly departed husband. Looking into the glass' smokey blue depths was just like staring into the gaze of her long ago college boyfriend Justin. “Oh gawd”...she cried silently.

"Wh- what's this– a, a new drink, Jade? She hiccupped then squinted her eyes to focus more clearly on the drinking glass. She had a vaguely uneasy notion she should go home soon, but she found she didn't want to, not really. Something was keeping her here, something more than seeing her friend and drowning her sorrows. She had a feeling of almost impending euphoria, as though something very good was going to happen if she stayed here long enough.

"Yes it is honey. Something I've been working on quite awhile now and it's just about perfect. It's called 'Martini on the Blues' in honour of the holiday season and of course your birthday on Boxing Day. Tonight is the first night I'm making them and you're my very first customer to have one. Happy early birthday, babe."

Adrienne sniffed it tentatively and decided she liked the smell of it. She took a quick taste. It was to her liking – a touch of strawberries, and something else. She couldn't figure it out what it was. She took another drink, then another. As she swallowed the last drop, Adrienne was surprised to see that the glass started glowing. She figured it was some kind of glow stick or something and she hoisted the glass up to peer myopically at the bottom of it, then sneezed as smoke began to trickle down from the bottom of the glass, thin and reedy and scented with cedar and strawberries.

She shook her head, setting the glass down again and catching sight of the bright Christmas decorations over the bar. Loneliness came over her again, slamming into her with almost physical painfulness…

Catching Up

I never dreamed having an actual job would make my life so hectic!

Don't get me wrong; I LOVE my job! I mean, what other job would let me read, blog, chat, and write during my 5-6 hour shift? Sometimes I think I get more accomplished here than at home.

But here's the thing: The husband unit is not holding up his end of the bargain. I still have to make the bed, cook dinner, supervise homework, make all the phone calls, find the bills so he can pay them, do the laundry, AND find time to watch my 4 1/2 hours of TV shows per week.

Oh yeah...and then there's my 'other' job.

You know, the one where I blog daily, chat with my online friends, and add words to blank documents? Suddenly that's confined to my 'day' job.

Last night I had the audacity to attend a chat. The first two hours were great (well, okay; I didn't get to post any of Kenzie's Wild At Heart, as my edits never arrived), but during the final half hour, the youngling suddenly brought it to my attention he had homework. And it was 'my' fault, because no one checked his backpack. The other parent in the house 'ordered' me to 'get off that damn computer RIGHT NOW' and monitor the homework. Why couldn't he do it? Stargate was on.

I compromised. I posted a 'gotta go' message and helped my youngling. Five minutes later, he was finished and tucked in bed, no story tonight. Then I tried to respond to another message. And suddenly I was denied access. So I clicked over to my email and sent the host a 'good night' email. Logged off; shut down the computer, and went to bed. Turns out Yahoo crashed, so nobody was able to post the polite 'goodbye' message.

Anyway, where was I? Oh yeah....what happened to dual parenting? I guess when he got in the habit of watching TV day and night, due to his 'time off', it continues even though he officially can't work anymore.

Hand me that skillet; there's going to be a serious 're-distribution of chores' discussion!

In Happier News:
Last week at Ball State was fun:) Maybe I'll get around to uploading the pictures in a few days. Daughter has until Feb 1st to apply, and needs 3 references from teachers, plus a parent letter from me. She didn't get to take her SAT's after all, so today she's taking her PSAT's.

K came home for the weekend, and we had a nice visit! He left last night and will return home for Thanksgiving. And the youngling was thrilled when his Big Brother took him to school yesterday, and picked him up afterward:)

Have a good day! Tomorrow, Briana Martini will be here, and then on Friday, we flash back to October 1980, and part 2 of the story:)

Terrific Tuesday with Jackie M Smith:)

Welcome! Please introduce yourself and tell us about your latest release.

Bio: Jackie M. Smith was born in the Maritimes of French-speaking father and English-speaking mother. She has three younger sisters. Jackie has always loved reading her mother's romance books. After moving to Montreal, she worked as a customer service representative. But her love of writing romances never stopped.

When she's not writing her next romance, Jackie enjoys her free time with her wonderful fiancé, creates book trailers for her fellow authors or reads a good romance book.

Have you ever had an idea for a story which scared you after you began writing it?

This situation hasn’t happened to me. Sometimes, I do face a blank page. But that doesn’t happen often.

Have you incorporated actual events from your own life into your books?

When I write my books, I don’t use actual events from my own life. But I do use some of my experiences.

How much research do you do? Do you research first and then write, or do you write first, then research as needed?

For my historical romances, I research my facts first and then write. When I find an interesting fact, sometimes, it changes my plot or adds a twist. If I get an idea and must change a scene, I get the needed information.

Is there any message you want readers to take from reading your work?

The message I’d like my readers to take would be that they read a satisfying love story.

Are you a plotter or a pantser? And have you ever had a story take on a life of its own?

I’m a plotter. I love plotting a story and see where it takes me.

How long did it take for you to be published?

My first book was published in 2009 after almost two years of writing. At first, I wasn’t sure to have my book published. The whole experience frightened me. But now, I couldn’t be happier to be an author.

If you could go back and tell yourself anything when you first began your writing career, what would you say?

Follow your dream.

Laptop or pen and ink? What are your ‘must-haves’ when writing?

When writing, I first write my draft with pencil and a notebook. Then I type everything down on my laptop. From there, I make the necessary changes.

Who are your favorite authors? Who would you say influenced you the most?

My favorite author is Danielle Steele. I grew up reading her books. I love her writing style. Her story as a writer has inspired me very much. LOL:) I discovered my writing style was similar to hers also!

What would your readers be surprised to learn about you?

My readers would probably surprised to know that I’m a big ice hockey fan.

For Fun:

Favorite Halloween memory?

My favorite Halloween memory would be when I was a kid, and my mom dressed us up with homemade costumes and makeup. We went Trick-or-Treating with my younger sisters. I had so much fun and it didn’t cost a penny.

Favorite Scary Movie?

The Wolfman with Benicio Del toro

Frankenstein, Dracula, or Werewolf?

Good question. I used to love Dracula but since I’ve seen Benicio Del Toro as a wolfman, he changed my mind about werewolves.

Thank you for being here today! Please tell us where we can find your books.

Blurb:

Winnie Douglas always loved taking pictures of her family and her hometown. One day, while reading a war magazine, pictures of the soldiers whose strength and courage touched her. With her family’s blessing, she journeys to Paris where a French magazine hires her to take pictures of the war.

Henry Whitfield answers the call of duty and travels halfway across the world to fight in the war. Far away from his family and Canadian hometown, he feels the loneliness. On the battlefield, he meets an angel. Afraid she is just a dream, he befriends Winnie.

War brought them together. Will it tear them apart?

Excerpt:

Taking his arm, she felt his strength but he covered her hand with gentleness. New sensations rushed throughout her body. She gazed into his eyes and saw the kindness and honesty. Yet, she guarded her heart. She couldn’t give it to someone she hardly knew. But, the more time she spent with him, the more she felt as though they’d known each other all her life.

They had so much in common; from books to food and dreams of having a family one day. He even made her laugh the whole time they walked. Indeed, she felt comfortable with him. The feeling unsettled her a bit as they walked close. Again, she found herself comparing him with James. Yet, with Henry she found herself smiling and giggling all the time.

As they shared an umbrella; shielding them against the cool raindrops, he talked of the battles he fought and the friends he lost on the front since the war started. She saw the sadness in his eyes. “I’m so sorry,” she said, touching his arm. “I can only imagine how it is on the battlefield.” She didn’t say another word; the horror he lived and saw every day broke her heart.

He gave her a reassuring smile. But she felt his pain and sadness.

The rain stopped. Winnie felt the cold against her cheeks. Yet, inside, warmth filled her. She felt the heat of his body radiate and warm her. She enjoyed having Henry with her now. She crooked her arm around his and held on a little more.

For the first time in her life, she didn’t ask any questions nor worried about tomorrow.

They reached the park near the Eiffel Tower and sat on a bench while he told her about the men in his company, and spoke of their bravery. “We call ourselves Bell’s Bulldogs,” he chuckled. “These men are the finest soldiers in the whole battalion. No. The whole infantry.” He spoke about his fellow soldiers with such pride and brotherly love. His friends. She saw in his sparkling eyes how much he cared for his fellow soldiers. He also talked of his hometown of Calgary. “Alberta is a beautiful province. Mountains and lakes, and nice people.”

She pictured the Rockies with the snow covered peaks. “Sounds like heaven.”

“Close enough,” he said. Henry took her hand in his. He didn’t say another word, but she understood what precious peace and quiet brought to him. She gave his strong lean fingers a light squeeze, hoping he knew how much she cared for him.

As they reached the front door of her apartment just after midnight, he took her hand and brought her fingers against his lips once more. His eyes met hers and he held her hands between his. Bringing her closer, he warmed her against the chill. A breath caught in her throat and her heart raced in her chest. She stared at his full lips and wondered what if his tempting mouth kissed her. She closed her eyes for a brief moment, calming her racing heart.

He bent his head and leaned it against hers. “Thank you for spending time with me tonight.” His low voice stirred a new wave of warmth through her.

She bit her lower lip and held her breath while her heartbeat drummed in her ears. With the tip of his thumb, he caressed her lips. Their eyes locked while his warm hand gently cupped her cheek. In a brisk yet gentle gesture, his lips took hers. She trembled under his touch; her hands on his chest, unmoving. His mouth tasted hers as his arms lowered around her; holding her tight against him. She kissed him with such fervour; her head spun with desire. Her arms surrounded his neck as she tilted her head; deepening his kiss. A low moan left her mouth as his lips traced her chin and jaw.

“Winnie,” his hot breath whispered against her ear. He held her for a long moment.

She leaned her head against his chest, feeling the warmth of his body through his thick jacket as rain drops fell around them. She closed her eyes, and prayed for Henry’s safety and the chance to see him again soon. “Please be careful,” she whispered. “And if you can, please write me.”

“I promise,” he said, holding her even closer. “Take care,” he whispered against her ear before taking her lips hostage once more.

She watched him walk away, breathless and wanting more of his kisses. She believed he’d keep his promise. She removed her glove and touched her swollen and hot lips. And she smiled. Twirling under the rain, she giggled, feeling happy and alive.

Saturday's Stupid Saying

Singer Britney Spears: I'm really getting into Indian religion.

Interviewer: Do you practice Hinduism?

Britney: What's that? Is it like Kabbalah?

Have a good weekend! I'm at our Fall Festival today, then the 'Ten'-tilizing event tomorrow. Here's hoping we have a good turnout! The weather is supposed to be in the mid-to-upper 80's, so I hope the Chili-fest isn't a bust. There's also a booth with yummy chicken and noodles!

Currently Reading: Finished both He's Just Not That Into You by Greg B??? and The Hot Flash Club by Nancy Thrasher and loved them! Recommended Reads! Next up: The Nanny Diaries by Emma McLaughlin.

Update on the new Love On The Rocks: Almost finished revamping Ch. 1. By the time I hit the 3rd page, the urge to procrastinate ala 'Do I REALLY want to do this?' was in full swing. Fortunately, I did not give up, and was almost to the end when 'the boss' asked me to drive her home. She'd over-exerted herself again, so I took her home while Travis worked the last hour.
