Molly and Erica Road Trip 2026

It's no secret I turned 60 last December.  My BFF did the same in May. But since we're 90 minutes apart with busy lives, I celebrated at home with family (that's what you do when your birthday is a week before a major holiday!) while she went to Pigeon Forge with her family (her special day happened to fall on a BLACKOUT weekend for me, so I couldn't even go up the day before!)

So what do you do?  "Hey, come to Louisville with me in July.  We'll party our a$$es off!"

Fortunately, two weeks before the event (and the discounted ticket were almost gone!), she agreed.  Her ticket bought; she agreed to be at my house by 8am Friday the 17th.  All was good!

Hiccup #1: I couldn't sleep Thursday night. Finally at 3am, I got up and trolled around the internet for an hour, going back to bed at 4. My alarm was set for 7am.

I did get up on time, drank a cup of coffee, and finished packing.  Erica arrived; I was still in my jammies.

Slight Hiccup #2:  Our new kitten crawled into my suitcase and took up residence while I was getting dressed.  No problem; I'll make sure other things are packed while Miku aka Scrappie Do aka Monster aka Squirt aka Peanut decides to move or I pick her up and reloacate her (that's what I ended up doing, earning me a glare from a nearly 9-week old.  Her mother has taught her well, ha ha!)

8:30 am:  We're on the road! We stop at Walmart in Princeton to top off the tank (a mere $36), run into Walmart for a 6-pack of Blue Berry Kool-Aid, then hit up Burger King for breakfast.  We're back on the highway by 10:15-30-ish.

About  90 minutes later, I pulled off at the Leavenworth exit (I still call it Tell City!) and purchased two footlong sandwiches from Subway, both ham and cheese.  They don't need refrigerated, since we can't check into our room until 3.

Around noon, we arrive and unload the van. My Con Mom, Marian Allen, greets me immediately, as does Jen Selinsky at the check in counter.  Whoo hoo, I have 'my' spot again!  Erica helps me unload, then I return to the van for load #2 and discover she has paid NO ATTENTION to my table displays on FB from last week.  Not to worry; it's a simple fix. I get everything organized, return the wagon to the van, and go park. I also gave her the tiara I'd bought and put on my own.

I come back in and am making some minor adjustments when Jayson William Allen grabs me in a hug...."So good to see you darlin'..." I introduced him to Erica:)

Then I took her on a tour. We started around the corner and introduced her to Jeri Maynard, Barbara Evers ("Don't Get Caught With Your Eyes Closed!"), which earned us both a giraff pendant, and Marian Allen and T.Lee Harris. Then it was on to the vendor hall.....then the 2nd half of the hallway......greeting Stephanie Lanham (Jayson's g/f), Ava Cuvey and Ariella Talix, Santiago Cirillo (he always greeted us with a bow and 'your majesties'!), Troy Maynard (The Very Vocal Viking) and a whole lot more!

I sold one book Friday, to fellow author Sianyn (Shannon in Welsh), who bought Playing With Time.  I'm interested in her Twisted Fairies.

Checked in at 3; we were in Rm 674, a nice hike from the elevators, but a NICE corner room with it's own hallway!  The shower was walk-in, and we had a king bed. Put the sandwiches in the fridge and went back downstairs.

Around 5:30, I was beginning to be hungry, so we went back up and grabbed half our food.  I had a panel at 7, and with the entertainment starting at 8, I knew we weren't going to have time to go get food. Scarfed down my sandwich and at 6:45, covered my table and used the facilities before my panel. Discovered some yellow streaks on my white tee, then was horrified to discover I'd dripped mustard all down the front of my badge and tee!  Oh well, the badge covered most of it.

Panel was good! 'Building Chemistry' had a good audience, and since we'd not received any prep for it, a few of the questions I just echoed another panelist! Marilyn Barr attended and expressed her exasperation we were 'too clean' in our descriptions!  "It's after hours....where are the f**ks?"

Afterward, went back to the room to change my shirt and to soak my other one. Fixed our cocktails (vodka/Kool-Aid) and returned to the ballroom to discover we'd missed the belly dancing, and settled in for Jayson's concert.  Around 11:30, headed back upstairs to decompress and go to sleep.  I did go back downstairs to get another washcloth, and without thinking, hugged Troy Maynard and told him I was going to bed.

Carl Moore's eyes widened and says, "Ohhhh.....I just put it together!"

Troy and I looked at each other. "Put what to-Oh no, we're not TOGETHER!"

Troy puts his arm back around me. "But we are together."

Carl laughed and put his arm around me, sandwiching me between them.

"Ooooh, a Molly Sandwich!"  We had a good laugh, then I went back upstairs and passed out!  My three hours of sleep was definitely catching up with me!

Day 2:  (I promise I won't get so detailed!)

After some confusion as to how the shower handle controlled the water temp (It was in an UP position, and very scalding water kept coming out), plus one trip downstairs to find out what I was doing wrong, Erica figured it out. Whomever had the room before us left it in the wrong position; it was supposed to be DOWN), we each got our showers and headed downstairs.

Jayson showed up and bought my Aiden Kross book!

Spent the rest of the time talking to a LOT of people, giving directions to rooms (Calumet was BEHIND a row of vendors, and you had to go under the stairway to get to it), and selling my banquet ticket to Marian Gosling (and apologizing for the mustard stains!). At 6, we covered the table, nearly had to evacuate due to the fire alarm going off, then went to Chipotle for dinner.  Came back, dressed in our sparkly shirts, fixed another cocktail for each, and went down to the party.

I'd put in Independence Day before figuring out the app, and put in my others. So when I was called up, I was surprised it was Edge of 17 instead. Was complimented, then Erica and I were called up for Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, but my mic was off for the 1st verse! E and I shared hers until they got mine turned on and we had a lot of dancers! Then waited.....and waited....danced, laughed, sang....and waited.  Finally at 11:30, I was able to belt out Independence Day, receiving cheers!  We even got Santiago up to do I Want It That Way by Backstreet Boys:) Returned to the room at midnight and passed out!

Day 3:

This is normally the day I'm away from my booth, taking pics of everyone. But instead, I shanghied everyone over to the Imaginarium banner, and we took pics there.  I also sold an UNPRECEDENTED 5 more books!  Normally, my weekend sales are 0 on Friday, 2-4 on Saturday, and maybe one on Sunday. So this was AMAZING!!!!  Broke down the table at 5, and went to the Troll Pub with Aubrey and Baron, like last year. Had a delicious meal of a Mushroom/Swiss burger and Caesar side salad, then took pics in front of the Troll before heading back to the hotel.  Holly had invited us up to their room, and it turned out they were in 774, right above us! After changing into PJs, we fixed our final cocktails and walked up the stairs. I'll admit, we did more observing than actual interaction. The men were around the table, drinking while the women were doing Tarot readings on each other. When Aubrey arrived and set hers up, I almost suggested leaving (we'd been there almost 30 mins by that time), but decided to just watch. I was trying to keep my feelings neutral; I don't believe in that stuff. But when Aubrey flicked over the final card and it was the Sexuality one, then admitted she'd NEVER had that card turn up before, we all lost it!

At one point, I leaned forward, patted Isa on the shoulder (she was getting the reading) and asked, "Is this a sign she needs to read my books?", which brought MORE laughter from the group!

Then Baron arrived and did one on Aubrey, which nearly had me rolling my eyes at her response to what was shown. After she was done, I asked Erica if she was ready to go back downstairs, so we said goodbye to everyone and left.

Monday:

Intended to sleep in, but was awake by 8, then got moving around 9am. Packed up; I went down to retrieve my wagon and move the van closer to the front door. Saw Carma, Aubrey, Baron, Wayne, Cassandra, and Miss Ruby in the lobby/restaurant, so hugged each one once more. Hauled everything down to the van and checked out. Stopped at the Arby's in Evansville for lunch, then came on home.

Back to reality......had a fun-filled weekend with my BFF, and she said she wouldn't mind a return trip next year! And there are still people who didn't make it this year I need to introduce her too (Brian K Morris, John Pyka, Demetrious Witherspoon, Steven Shrewsbury, Sandy Lender)  So Note To Self:  Get hotel reservations in BEFORE the double queen rooms are booked up!

Esp if Sara decides to come with the kids.  We're gonna need more room.

Also, this convention MIGHT be held elsewhere next year; the convention has somewhat outgrown the Holiday Inn.

2) Discovered the trash bags I'd put in the locker were missing; Bryan was dealing with the same Hispanic customer from last week, so went to Receiving to get more.  Aisle was blocked, so Ricky climbed through and got them for me.  Then Madi was upset b/c it put her behind closing LG.

3)  Had ZERO customers from 8:30-9:30.

4) Nan and Mel arrived at 9:45 (5th trip!) and while N was getting paint mixed, M got his lumber.  Then we waited on N until 10:10. Finally left at 10:15!

Outfit:  Black Journey tee, 2 button capris, small gold hoops

1) Couldn't find Jax for Code 3 or Code 50 for 15 mins

2) Karen looked for light switch ON light; showed her where it was

3) The stool is fixed!!!

4) Place emptied out around 9:30

5) Inventory week, so very short-staffed.

6) Had several returns at close.

Outfit:  Gray Blessed G'ma tee, 1 button capris.  Skipped earrings, due to left one infected.

Day 97: Hot, 90s; 73 t/a

ASM:  Dan

HC:  Levi

Loaders:  Jax, Donovan

1) Woman called to me:  Hey sweetheart, can you unlock this for me?"

Ummmm....I'm not your sweetheart, and I can't leave my register, but I'll call someone for you.....

SM Maria was nearby; the woman flagged her down.  I wasn't even logged into my Zebra yet!

2) Customer with cabinets had boss on phone.  Tried 3 cards; none worked.  45 mins later, decided to pick them up tomorrow. He spoke very little English; we communicated through the phone translator; it's saved under MY phone # (had to transfer it to Reg #1, in order to ring up customers while we were waiting); I HOPE no one gives me flak about it tomorrow!

3) Due to running out of $5s and $10s, was on Reg #2 from 5:30 to close.

4) Customer returned ceiling tiles and was going to push them back, but got hung up on suckers, so just left it.  WTH???

5) Customer was told we could order the $39 batteries, but we had none in the network and the system wouldn't let me do a PUL. Customer demanded a manager, and Levi was stuck at CS, so sent them up there.

6) Customer arrived to pick up his order, but Fulfillment was way behind, so he picked it himself. Then I couldn't figure out how to print it. He took some of it and pushed the rest behind the Pro Desk and said he'd return in the morning for Pro Kathy to figure out.

7) Reg #2 ran out of $1s; Levi managed to THAT!

8) I misread the time when I clocked out for lunch and clocked in a minute late. Levi was like, 'You're 4 minutes late! Now I only get a 15 min lunch!"

"I'm sorry; I'm old and stressed out!"

Outfit:  Blue MLU tee, long capris. No earrings, as I'm trying to let my left earlobe heal.

Day 98: Hot, 91; 89 t/a

ASM:  Dan

HC:  Madi, Levi

Loaders:  Jax, Donovan

1) Customer wanted jobsite box; couldn't locate anyone in HW or Tools. Levi and Donovan found one.

2) Customer wanted metal trashcan discounted for tiny ding at the back. Told her I could knock off $10, but the HC was busy at CS and would most likely be 15 mins to arrive.  They opted to leave it behind.

3) Customer returned a lot of PVC.......off 5 receipts, ten mins before we closed!

Outfit:  Blue floral with sheer sleeves; long capris/ Still no earrings, as I'm hoping the left lobe will heal soon.

Day 99: Hot, 90s; 74 t/a

ASM:  Shannon

HC:  Levi

Loaders:  Jax, Donovan

1) Same Hispanic customer from previous 3 days showed me pics of the cabinets he wanted, then had me call his boss.  After being hung up on and not understanding him a few times, we finally tried his card 3 times, but all declined.  At least it was only 20 mins today, as opposed to the hour Wednesday and 45 mins on Tuesday!

2) Customer asked if they could take the cart outside.  Told them no, they must drive their car inside.  Got a laugh!

Outfit:  Blue USA tee, long capris.  Still no earrings yet.

Tomorrow:  Off To Louisville!!!

1) Male customer arrived wearing only bib overalls, but at least he had his side panels buttoned up!

2) According to the flow chart, Alex was supposed to work 8-6, but arrived at 7 and was working the night shift. WTH??  Does this mean he's off tomorrow???

3) Arrived @3 only to discover my shift was 3:30-close.  Clocked in, did my AP4Me and LU, printed off my schedule, THEN went to Lumber.

4) Found earbuds on the floor in front of the Pro desk. Turned out to be Riley's!

5) DS Ian arrived at 9pm.  Again, WTH????

Outfit:  Gray LU Plank tee, 1 button cut off capris, silver zirconian hoops.

2) Alex arrived at 5; Olivia's short day.

3) Took my lunch from 7-8.

4) Customer asked about why we had flat cameras in the parking lot....told him it was extra security, due to thefts.  He said a lot people don't like them, aka 'Big Brother watching'.  John later told me the police put them up, not our company.

Outfit:  Gray USA flowers, 1 button capris, large zirconians.

Day 94: Hot, mid 80s, T-storm; 54 t/a

ASM:  Dan

5) Discovered I was supposed to take my LUNCH at 5, not just a 15. My lunch break came at 8:15!

Outfit:  Vegas Indian Motorcycle tee, 1 button cut off capris, blue sapphire hoops

Off the rest of the weekend for InConJunction!

America Turns 250!!!!!

Several events have been planned to celebrate this special year, and I'm proud to be a part of two of them!

Summer On Main 7/26-Cancelled, due to rain, but rescheduled for 7/3.  Unfortunately, I have to work that day, but am hoping I can either a) swap shifts with someone or b) my boss lets me take a very late lunch???  We take the stage at 8:15; I could easily clock out at 8; slide into my place; sing; be back by 9!

Celebration Singers at Lincoln Ampitheatre 6/27:

This is an open-sided venue, so the show goes on, rain or no rain!  We sloshed our way to Jasper, pouring rain the entire time, and ran into flooded roads near Ft. Branch. They very nicely delayed the performance an hour, to give the rain time to move along.

They set us up strangely. Sopranos were to the left; altos on the right. I was scheduled to sit, but all the seats were taken, and rather snottily informed the vacant seats were 'spoken for',  I got myself a chair from the back of the stage and put it in a vacant spot in the 2nd row....next to the snotty lady.

There were two stools to my left, which were soon occupied. The lady on the end asked me if I'd taken her folder; I had not. She found it soon after, then asked me again if I'd moved it. I explained patiently that my spot had been vacant. A few moments later, she asked if she could switch with me. I said no, that she and the other lady were Soprano 1, while I was a Soprano 2.  The other lady swapped spots.

The program is about to start; the sun came out. Nagging Lady Now Beside Me whispers the sun is interfering with her ability to see her music and would I PLEASE swap places?

To keep the peace, I agreed.......then spent an uncomfortable hour with no back support; my left leg went to sleep, and I was now sandwiched between two ladies taking the high notes!  Thank god Precious Rhea was behind me and in my ear; I followed her!  I couldn't even hear the two ladies on either side.

We did stay for Act 1 of Pioneer Song, and I was very impressed with one of the child actors.  She knew her lines and was good at 'emoting' when not in the spotlight!

It still drives me nuts when people INSIST on texting and driving......and using their GPS when they KNOW WHERE WE'RE GOING!!!!!   I don't CARE if someone needs the code to a house ASAP....you're DRIVING!!!  AND WE'RE LATE......

End rant.  Nuff said.

Friday July 3rd:

Show went off with just a few glitches.  I was able to leave at 7:30 and when Nanette and I arrived, I realized I'd forgotten my music!  Then the piano was too loud...too soft....just right....then too loud again!  Neil Gordon livestreamed it for me; said the connection cut out a few times.

Went to the Hamilton Sing-A-Long, and was disappointed:  I thought they'd have the closed captioning up on the screen, but no.  Left after the 1st song.  Rain was also in the forecast.

Saturday July 4th:

My town received some sad news this afternoon:  Our fireworks were postponed due to the unexpected death of the organizer, who was killed in a freak accident while testing one of the rockets. It malfunctioned and exploded in his face, causing shrapnel to penetrate his brain, killing him instantly.

I'd bought some special Red, White, and Blue sparklers earlier, so we lit them. Will had bought a Magic Mushroom Fountain and some idiot decided to drive down our street while it was going off, WITH his window rolled down.  *eye roll*  Also, the neighbors had a nice display we could see from the porch.

Sunday July 5th:

Sang at the 10:30 service at Westminster Presbyterian in Washington, In with 9 others, and we were complimented. We sang My Country Tis Of Thee and Thank You For The Blessings.  Joyce had also sent us an email with the following message:

"Kim McConnell, the leaders of the Pepper Choplin commission, told him about our performances.  He wrote, Please say, "hello" to Joyce and all the good people in Vincennes. I so enjoyed my time there. Please also tell them that I'm working on singing trip to Greece in October, 2027 and perhaps a concert in the redesigned Lincoln Center, also in 2027.   Cathy Briles is traveling to Croatia this fall to sing with Pepper.  Time to start thinking about trips in 2027!"

While Greece is off the table for me, I would like to return to NYC!
